Anastasia Potapova and Elizabeth Mandlik will face each other in the first round of the 2023 ATX Open on Tuesday, February 28.
Over the first two weeks of February, Anastasia Potapova pushed her body to the limit and was duly rewarded. Over the course of two European indoor tournaments, she played seven straight three-set matches, reaching the quarterfinals in Lyon and winning the championship in Linz, her second WTA trophy (2022 Istanbul) and her first-ever professional victory on hard courts. Over the past year, the majority of her campaigns have ended in the first or second round. She has, however, also moved up in the rankings by about a hundred spots since March, when she was outside the top 120. She won two WTA championships, reached the final in Istanbul, and advanced to the semifinals in Lausanne, Hamburg, and Cluj-Napoca.
In August of last year, Elizabeth Mandlik won her first matches in the main draw of the tour, defeating Tamara Zidansek in a two-hour, 42-minute match at the US Open and Alison Riske in San Jose, 6-3, 6-3. It became a part of a season that saw her win the first three W25 championships of her career, reach her first W100 final, and climb over 350 rankings spots. The former top 20 junior at age 21 appears to have reached a wall recently. In her last 12 tournaments, she has only been able to win four matches, all of which were against players who were much lower in the rankings. She competed in Merida a few days ago and lost to Kimberly Birrell in the opening round by scores of 6-4, 6-3.
