After defeating first-time semifinalist Christopher O’Connell in straight sets, Brandon Nakashima took a step closer to winning his first ATP title. The American’s matchups this week haven’t been particularly straightforward; in addition to losing a set to Daniel Elahi Galan in the quarterfinal, he also had challenges from the inexperienced Zachary Svajda in the first round and the Australian in the semifinal. Between ATP Sydney (January) and’s-Hertogenbosch (June) earlier this year, the 21-year-old spent five months on the main tour without making a quarterfinal appearance, the longest dry stretch in his young career. He did well to overcome all of those issues, and he is just one win away from returning to the top 50 in the ATP rankings.
Marcos Giron has exceeded expectations and advanced to the San Diego final because of a kind draw early on and a strong showing against the top-seed Dan Evans in the semifinal. He defeated James Duckworth in the quarterfinals and Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the second round (R1 bye) in straight sets despite both of them lacking expertise on hard courts, particularly at this level. The American’s 2022 (20/26) statistics aren’t great, but he did manage to produce a few standout performances. Consistency has been the 29-year-biggest old’s issue all season. He has achieved three quarterfinal appearances and defeated players like Botic Van De Zandschulp, Taylor Fritz, Pablo Carreno Busta.
