Brandon Nakashima and Daniel Galan will face each other in the first round of the 2022 ATP San Diego Open on Friday, September 23.
Brandon Nakashima has returned to form, and the American is performing admirably on home soil. It’s hardly surprising; most Americans perform exceptionally well at home, and he’s no exception. A chance to advance to the semi-finals is a big deal for Nakashima, who will face a player he is expected to beat. Yes, Galan is a good player, but he’s not one Nakashima should be afraid of, especially on the hard courts of North America. The American is 29-22 on the year, but only 13-12 on hard courts, which could change. He didn’t have the best US Open, but he did meet Jannik Sinner. Deep runs are required for Nakashima to regain some of his lost confidence.
Daniel Galan had a down year last year, and his ranking dropped significantly. He wasn’t among the top 100 players in the world, which was a problem. To compensate, he has played some incredible tennis this year, going 48-23 and returning to the top 100. The majority of his victories have come on clay, which is his preferred surface, but he also performs well on hard courts. Two wins this week certainly demonstrate that, and they came against difficult opponents. He has a strong serve and precise groundstrokes, but he lacks power. Nakashima is a difficult opponent for him, but he’ll give it his all with a semi-final on the line. Chances like this don’t come along very often for him.
