Casper Ruud will tee off against 13-time champion Rafael Nadal in the final of the 2022 Roland Garros. Nadal got past third seed Alexander Zverev in the semi-final after the German was forced to withdraw due to what looked like a serious injury. The Spanish tennis legend had also beaten world no. 1 and tournament favourite Novak Djokovic in the quarter final. Ruud, on the other hand, has had a comparatively simpler time at the Grand Slam so far. The eighth seed defeated Marin Cilic in the semis and an unseeded Holger Rune in the quarter-finals. It is the first time ever Ruud has made it to the final of a Grand Slam.

Zverev forced to withdraw

Rafael Nadal reached his 14th Roland Garros final on Friday, after Alexander Zverev’s epic struggle was cut short on the eve of a second-set tie-break in a match that had already lasted more than three hours due to a significant ankle injury. One of the season’s most exciting matches was cut short at 7-6(8), 6-6 on Court Philippe Chatrier when the German had to leave the court in a wheelchair after badly rolling his right ankle while hunting down a Nadal forehand deep behind the baseline.

Cilic falls short against Ruud

Casper Ruud is going strong in his Roland Garros journey, which is already in its second week. The 23-year-old reached his first major quarter-final earlier this month, becoming the first Norwegian man to do so, and is now through to the final after defeating Marin Cilic 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in the semi-finals on Friday. In Sunday’s final, the eighth seed will face Rafael Nadal for the first time, hoping to deny the Spaniard a record-extending 14th Roland Garros triumph and 22nd Grand Slam singles title. Ruud has been training at the Spaniard’s Mallorca academy since September 2018, heightening the anticipation for the title match.
