Following a first-round bye, Rafael Nadal will face Tommy Paul in the second round of the 2022 Paris Masters. Nadal made a triumphant comeback after ending the 2021 season early due to injury. When he returned, he won the Melbourne Summer Set and his 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. At the Mexican Open, he won his third title in a row. The Spaniard’s winning streak ended in the final of the Indian Wells Masters, where he was injured. Nadal was out for a few months before returning to action at the Madrid Open, where he reached the quarterfinals. He was eliminated in the third round of the Italian Open. Despite being out of shape, the former World No. 1 won his 22nd Major championship at the French Open.
In the first round, Paul faced Roberto Bautista Agut. He took an early break to lead 2-0, but the Spaniard quickly levelled the score. For the next few games, the duo maintained a strong serve. Paul took a break in the ninth game of the set to go 5-4 up and easily served out the set to put himself in control. The American struck first in the second set, breaking serve to lead 3-2. Bautista Agut was unable to break through on his opponent’s serve, and Paul quickly won 6-4, 6-4.
