Richard Gasquet, who is rated 91st in the world, will compete against Rafael Nadal in the third round of the 2022 US Open on Sunday.
In the second round at Flushing Meadows, Rafael Nadal struggled against Fabio Fognini in what appeared to be a contest that was going against the grain. Even though he suffered an unexpected injury in the closing moments of the match, Nadal prevailed 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the third round. Nadal, who has previously battled to a first-round victory, was in trouble when he failed to hold his serve twice in the opening set and, more critically, failed to convert only one break point. In the second set, four consecutive service breaks put the combatants at 2-2. Then, Nadal lost serve once again, giving Fognini a 4-2 advantage. From that point on, however, Fognini’s fortunes rapidly changed as Nadal quickly advanced by winning 16 of the following 19 games despite accidentally hitting his own nose with the racket in the process.
Gasquet had only once advanced to the third round of the US Open since 2016. This is why he was a huge 21/10 underdog to defeat his opponent when they faced off in the second round here against the seeded Miomir Kecmanovic. Gasquet defeated his Serbian opponent in four sets, winning by scores of 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, and 6-4 to advance to the third. Nearly three hours passed during the game. In the first round, Gasquet had previously defeated Taro Daniel. He is coming off a strong showing at Winston-Salem, where he advanced to the quarterfinals after three straight victories.
Rafael Nadal and Richard Gasquet are scheduled to face each other on Sunday, September 4 in the round of 16 of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
