The Spaniard triumphed 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 over Australian Rinky Hijikata at Flushing Meadows, where he is competing for the first time since winning the title in 2019.
Rafael Nadal had some time to find his flow on Tuesday evening at the US Open, but the four-time winner did it and advanced to the second round. The Spaniard triumphed 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 over Australian Rinky Hijikata at Flushing Meadows, where he is competing for the first time since winning the title in 2019. The second seed has won 19 of his last 20 matches at the season’s last Grand Slam, and he has won all 20 major championship this year. “It’s been a long wait. For some time I thought I may not be able to be back, so I am super happy. Night sessions are the best,” Nadal said.
“I just have to be humble and accept the process, day after day in practices and matches and stay positive.” Nadal’s next opponent will be Italian Fabio Fognini, who came from two sets down to defeat the 22-time Slam champion in New York in 2015. The Spaniard has a 13-4 advantage in their head-to-head matchup.
Rafael Nadal and Fabio Fognini are scheduled to face each other on Friday, September 2 in the second round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
