Over the course of four thrilling sets on Saturday night at Margaret Court Arena, Roberto Bautista Agut ended Andy Murray’s heroics. For the first time since 2019, the No. 24 seed advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open with a 6-1 6-7(7) 6-3 6-4 triumph. Murray broke down in tears during his Australian Open pre-tournament news conference four years ago. The three-time Grand Slam winner believed it to be the end of the line. His “last” match versus Bautista Agut was a classic five-set rollercoaster in which he narrowly lost. What a full circle experience to face the Spaniard at Melbourne Park once more. Meanwhile, American qualifier Brandon Holt was defeated by Bautista Agut in five sets. The last three contests between Murray and the world No. 25 were won by Murray, matching their overall record at 3-3. Did Murray have enough energy left after spending more than 10 hours on the court across two matches?

In stark contrast to the Spaniard’s razor-sharp start, Murray’s movement was naturally difficult. In the second game, Bautista Agut’s backhand pass over the tramlines set the tone, and the 34-year-old roadrunner quickly sped to a set and 4-2 lead. Murray, a five-time finalist, was being encouraged by the enthusiastic MCA audience. The Scottish player hoisted his racquet in a display of defiance after winning a gruelling 29-shot rally. Murray would yell in the direction of the spectators after each successful point; it was an exciting environment. Two set points were created by Bautista Agut’s confident performance in the tiebreak. Murray managed to win intense net duels and tie the match at one set apiece while yelling “get up!” to the enthusiastic crowd.

After each drawn-out point, Murray would slump over, groaning from effort. The person on the other side of the net appeared to be Bautista Agut. It started to show, and the No. 24 seed showed resiliency to win the third. Murray took away a 2-0 lead in the fourth with his ultra-dogged defence and cunning shot-making, but this time the rollercoaster lost momentum. Murray couldn’t have offered any more during the boxing-style match. “Playing Andy at a Grand Slam is incredibly challenging every time. He is an expert player who understands how to play Grand Slam matches, according to Bautista Agut. “I’m pleased with how I handled my anxiety and jitters. I’m overjoyed about the victory. “I’m competing well, feeling comfortable on the court, and doing everything I can to prepare for successful matches off the court. “Was clearly very difficult, but I liked the game and the ambiance. I believe I’m ready to compete well in the following round.

On the list of Spanish men who have appeared in the most Grand Slam final 16 matches during the Open era, Bautista Agut is tied with his countryman Carlos Moya for eighth position. It’s the 13th fourth round for “RBA,” which is an incredible level of consistency. The close-quarters encounter on Saturday night featured Murray winning 25 of the 41 net points and Bautista Agut managing 29 of the 41.
