Garbine Muguruza will be disappointed with her performance in 2022 after a 42-17, trophy-laden season. The Spaniard has only won two matches in a row twice this season and has a 12-16 record in San Diego. The Qatar Open, where she reached the quarterfinals, and the US Open were the two tournaments where she won two consecutive matches. The World No. 13 recently competed in the Japan Open, having won 10 titles from 17 finals in her career. She won her second round match after receiving a bye in the first round, but lost in the last eight to Liudmila Samsonova. Muguruza will be desperate to get going in San Diego after struggling to find a rhythm all year.
Elena Rybakina, who joined the list of major winners this year by winning Wimbledon, will face the two-time Grand Slam champion. The Kazakh player has been in excellent form since winning the grass court major, and he comes to San Diego with a 38-19 season record. She knocked out Madison Keys, Aliaksandra Sasnovic, and Petra Kvitova on her way to the semifinals in Ostrava last week, but she was defeated by eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova. Rybakina appeared in three finals this year, winning Wimbledon by defeating Ons Jabeur in the final, but losing to Ash Barty in Adelaide and Katerina Siniakova in Portoroz.
