Elise Mertens and Anna Kalinskaya are scheduled to face each other in the second round of the 2022 WTA Guadalajara Open on October 19.
A win-loss record of 21-20 does not do justice to a player who was ranked 12th in the world not long ago. And that’s exactly where Elise Mertens was two weeks ago when she entered the Monastir Open. Elise Mertens, on the other hand, has reminded her detractors – and probably herself – of what she is capable of. Mertens has only dropped two sets in six matches, winning all six, including a title victory at Monastir and now a first-round rout of Asia Muhammad. Mertens won her first set 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 35 minutes, with her only hiccup coming in the second set’s second game, when she dropped her serve.
While Anna Kalinskaya has been steadily improving, reaching a career-high of 51st earlier this year after performances in Guadalajara, Indian Wells, and Miami, she has struggled with fitness issues. This season, Kalinskaya has had six occasions where she has had to withdraw from or retire from a match. That is not a number that will please anyone, especially given what Kalinskaya has demonstrated. Consider the first round, where Kalinskaya was 16/5 against the in-form Barbora Krejcikova and still managed to win in straight sets. The Russian won 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 43 minutes, with no major issues in the match.
