Daniil Medvedev and Stan Wawrinka are scheduled to face each other in the round of 16 of the 2022 ATP Moselle Open September 22.
Daniil Medvedev’s title defence campaign at the US Open earlier this month ended in failure, and as a result, he plummeted from first to fourth in the ATP rankings. He played well and advanced to the second week in New York without dropping a set, but in the round of 16, he was defeated by the confident and in-form Nick Kyrgios. However, the Russian may see this as a blessing in disguise as he has been striving to maintain or surpass the top spot in the ATP rankings all season, which has had an impact on his play and results during the past nine months. The top-ranked Russian would be aiming for a strong season’s end. He has a great record on indoor hard courts. He has won 125 matches on hard courts so far in his career and won a significant championship at the ATP Finals two years ago.
Stan Wawrinka entered ATP Metz last week winless in six matches, but he has since turned things around, winning three straight victories over Laslo Djere and Zsombor Piros in the qualifying rounds as well as Joao Sousa in the first round. On indoor hard courts, the former world #3 hasn’t fared as well as his Russian opponent. He presently has a 96/78 record on the surface across all levels, and his only ATP championship was played on indoor hard courts.
