On Thursday, Daniil Medvedev defeated home favorite Dominic Thiem in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals in Vienna. Medvedev, who is playing in the Austrian capital for the second time, has now equaled his previous best record in the tournament, after exiting in the last eight in 2020. The world number four, who had won his first match against Nikoloz Basilashvili, needed only an hour and 38 minutes to beat Thiem in round two. Medvedev’s season record now stands at 42-15. He has reached the finals four times this year, but has only won one title, which he won in Los Cabos. With a win, he will advance to his second consecutive semifinal and eighth overall.

Jannik Sinner, last year’s semifinalist, is one win away from repeating that performance in Vienna, as the World No. 12 defeated Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals. The sixth seed, who had beaten Cristain Garin in the first round, allowed the Argentine to come back from a break down in both sets, but he eventually got back in front to win 7-5, 6-3 in an hour and 30 minutes. The sixth seed, who defeated Garin 6-3, 6-2 in the opener, won his 47th match of the season on Thursday. The 21-year-old will be appearing in a quarterfinal for the tenth time this season, but he has only made it past the last eight stage twice this season.
