Daniil Medvedev has had a dismal season so far in 2022, but he has a lot to look forward to now that he appears to have found his form and confidence, which he lost in January at the Australian Open. The Russian #1 dominated eventual champion and fellow former #1 Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the ATP Astana last month (6-4 6-7, retired) and won his second championship of the 2022 season in Vienna last week, dropping only one set throughout the season.

For the third time, Alex de Minaur defeated Sebastian Korda in three sets to advance to the second round of the Paris Masters. He has a perfect 2-0 record in second-round matches in the competition, and one of his previous four campaigns here ended in the round of 16 two years ago at the hands of Daniil Medvedev. His previous three indoor hard court defeats in 2022 came against eventual finalists Stefanos Tsitsipas in Rotterdam and Holger Rune in Stockholm and Basel. He is now up against a probable finalist in the early stages of the Paris Masters, hoping for a different result.
