Medvedev and Millman will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 Australian Open on January 18.
On January 18, the 2023 Australian Open’s second round will feature home favourite John Millman taking on 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev. Marcos Giron and Medvedev squared off in the opening round. The former World No. 1 delivered a bagel to win the opening set, which was entirely one-sided. The American held serve to tie the second set at one, but the Russian won the next five games in a row to win the set. In the third set, Giron made a little progress, but it wasn’t enough to defeat Medvedev. He once more won the match 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 by stringing together five games in a row.
Marc-Andrea Huesler was the opponent Millman faced off against in Melbourne. In the first set, neither player managed to capitalise on a break point, forcing a tie-break. Three set points were in the Australian’s favour, but his rival won by edging him out. Millman battled valiantly to win the fourth set, twice breaking his rival’s serve in the process. The Australian jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the final set as the tide had turned decisively in his favour by this point. The local hero quickly completed a 6-7 (8), 7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-3 victory to end the match.
