Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz are scheduled to face one another in the Third round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Friday, August 19.
Fritz eliminated Andrey Rublev in the third round, preventing an all-Russian quarterfinal. Taylor Fritz was stretched to three sets in this one, but he came out on top. It’s worth noting that Fritz faced six break-points during the match but saved each one, only to lose the first set in a tie-breaker. He retaliated forcefully, breaking his opponent twice in the second set to tie the match. However, things appeared to be in limbo again in the third game, with neither player managing a break, with Fritz saving three break-points in the sixth game. Fritz defeated Rublev in the 11th game by breaking him and then serving it out.
Daniil Medvedev won his 22nd hard court match of the season, winning 7-5, 7-5 to set up his meeting with Fritz. In a match where Medvedev’s first and second serves were slightly better than his opponent’s, he broke Shapovalov in the third game of the first set. The Canadian levelled things up in the eighth game, only to lose his serve in a lengthy 11th game. The second set was decided on serve until the 11th game, when Shapovalov saved four break points and then lost serve. Medvedev set up his last eight match by serving it to love.
