Matteo Berrettini’s 2022 season was shaped by a slew of injuries. Due to a series of events and frequently being out of peak physical condition, the Italian tennis player was unable to leave so many positive results this year. The 26-year-old did not have the best season of his career, but despite the difficulties, he won an important semifinal at the Australian Open as well as victories in Stuttgart and Queen’s.

Because he had just returned from a previous edition’s final, Covid-19’s sudden optimism caused him to miss his most important appointment of the season (Wimbledon). The Italian tennis player was one step away from winning the ATP 250 in Naples when he was sidelined by a foot injury. He also missed the Master 1000 in Paris-Bercy and the Davis Cup finals.

Much has been said in recent days about Filippo Volandri’s decision during the Davis Cup semifinal between Italy and Canada. The current captain of the Italian team had to deal with Simone Bolelli’s sudden injury and was forced to give up the expert double player just at the crucial moment. Volandri has chosen to field Matteo Berrettini alongside Fabio Fognini. Berrettini had not played an official match since losing to Lorenzo Musetti in the final in Naples, and he did not play his best against Felix Auger-Aliassime and Vasek Pospisil, who won in two close sets.

However, the Italian did not leave his mark in a specific statistical category: in fact, Berrettini was never able to beat any tennis player in the top ten of the ATP world ranking throughout the year. Berrettini suffered a setback on both occasions, rendering him unable to continue the adventure in the reference tournament: against the Spanish champion Rafael Nadal in Melbourne and in the final of the ATP 250 in Gstaad against a tough Casper Ruud.

Six other top 50 athletes, in addition to Matteo Berrettini, were unable to beat a top 10 this year. Karen Khachanov (whose victory has been missing since 2019) and Emil Ruusuvouri both have a score of 0-7. The Frenchman Adrian Mannarino (0-5) and the other transalpine Arthur Rinderknech (0-4) are also present. There are plenty of Americans: Reilly Opelka has the same record as the blue (0-2), and Brandon Nakashima has three stoppages against this type of player.
