Pedro Martinez and Alexei Popyrin will take on each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Monday, October 3.
After a strong start to the season, Pedro Martinez‘s fortunes have taken a terrible turn. He has a terrible win-loss record in 2022 (22/27) and on outdoor hard courts (5/10), and he is now on an eight-match losing skid across all levels, going back to the ATP Kitzbuhel tournament in July. Despite all of his difficulties, the Spaniard may still be satisfied with his season’s performance because he won his first ATP tournament in Santiago (clay) in February and had at least one main-draw victory in his first nine matches, which ultimately helped him reach a career-high ranking of #40.
It hasn’t been much better for Alexei Popyrin in 2022, as he only managed to win four main-draw matches in tour-level competitions throughout these nine months. Although he has had several successful weeks at the Challenger levels and has won 21 games overall, he is having trouble winning games at the top level. The successful 2019 season’s 2021 ATP Singapore champion made his debut in Tokyo as a qualifier and met the eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the first round, losing 4-6 2-6.
