Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic has had a hit-or-miss season, with more setbacks than victories. Last year, the 27-year-old had a 41-27 season that included a first-ever WTA final appearance at the Prague Open. Martincova is 18-22 this year across all levels and 13-13 on hard courts. Her best finish this year was a semifinal in Nottingham (on grass). Aside from that, she only made it to one more quarterfinal, in St. Petersburg. While Martincova has won a number of qualifying matches, she is 11-21 in main draws and 3-6 in her last six main draw appearances since losing in the first round at Wimbledon.

Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland lost to Jodie Anna Burrage of Great Britain in a second qualifying round match that lasted three sets, but as a lucky loser, she was still able to advance to the main draw. Although Voegele has had a very difficult year and is only 1-4 from her main draw appearances at the tour level this year, she will be hoping to take advantage of the opportunity. She defeated Elsa Jacquemot in Lyon in her lone victory. Since losing as a lucky loser in the second round of the Miami Open, she hasn’t competed in a main-draw match. Additionally, she hasn’t done well in tournaments at lower levels either.
