Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Roman Safiullin will take on each other in the second round of the 2022 ATP Tel Aviv Open September 28.
Despite the fact that Tomas Martin Etcheverry has reached three Challenger finals this year, winning one, and has broken into the top 100 for the first time in his career, his opening round victory over Aslan Karatsev, the world number 39 and sixth seed in Tel Aviv, still counts as a minor upset. Both men struggled to hold serve at the start of the match, but it was Etcheverry who managed the first break, and he went on to take the first set, clinching it with another break. Except for a brief interlude in the middle where the pair traded breaks, the second set was dominated by serve. Etcheverry’s form, however, deserted him in the tie-break, which Karatsev won without conceding a point.
Roman Safiullin had a successful Challenger tour season, but he hadn’t played since failing to qualify for the US Open. Any ring rust, however, vanished in the heat of battle against Hugo Grenier of France, another man who has recently enjoyed success on the Challenger tour, in their first round match. Grenier, who was ranked six places higher than Safiullin, started the stronger and won the first set with a single break of serve. However, the roles were reversed in the second set, and it was Safiullin who won. He then took control of the match by breaking Grenier twice at the start of the third set.
