Magda Linette and Mirra Andreeva will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on April 29.
Magda Linette has won her first main draw title at the Madrid Open, where four of her previous five appearances had ended in qualifying and the other in the first round. She beat Marketa Vondrousova 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 in two hours and 42 minutes after trailing by a break four times in the first set. Even as recently as September, the Pole was ranked outside the top 70. She stepped up her game in the final months of the 2022 season, winning three hard-court finals, including one in Chennai, and received a big boost when she beat three top 20 players to reach the semifinals in Melbourne despite having never played in a Slam second week before.
Mirra Andreeva’s magical week continues after she stunned world No. 14 Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round. In the first-set tiebreak, she faced three consecutive set points and saved all of them with fearless shot selection to win 7-6, 6-3. She is now 15-0 after beginning her professional season in 2023 this month. The Russian wildcard, who turns 16 today, climbed into the junior top three after reaching the Australian Open final. She entered the top 200 as a professional after winning back-to-back W60 clay-court titles in Switzerland this month, and she began her WTA debut this week with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Leylah Fernandez.
