There are players that people remember due to their numerous achievements in their careers. Three fine examples of such a player in the world of tennis are Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. However, people also tend to remember historic moments in sport. Who can ever forget teenager Emma Raducanu lifting the women’s US Open crown in 2021? She might not have a career as great as the Federers or Nadals, but she will certainly be remembered. Such a player is also Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego. The 26-year-old might not have had an exceptional career, but he did become the first Italian in 15 years to win an ATP clay court tournament in Italy.

Sonego debuted on the ATP Tour in May 2016 at the Italian Open, where he received a wild card and lost in the first round to Joao Sousa. He won his first Challenger title on October 17, 2017, when he defeated Tim Putz at the 2017 Sparkassen ATP Challenger.

At the 2018 Australian Open, Sonego defeated Robin Haase to begin his Grand Slam career. In the second round, he was defeated by Richard Gasquet. After losing in the third round of qualifying to Ernest Gulbis, Sonego entered the 2018 Wimbledon as a lucky loser. Taylor Fritz beat him in straight sets in the first round.

Sonego advanced to the Monte-Carlo quarterfinals as a qualifier, defeating 8th seed Karen Khachanov along the way. In straight sets, he was defeated by eventual runner-up Duan Lajovi. In June 2019, the Italian won his first ATP title in Antalya, Turkey, defeating Serbian Miomir Kecmanovi in the final in three sets.

Sonego reached the fourth round of the 2020 French Open for the first time in his career, defeating Emilio Gómez, Alexander Bublik, and 27th seed Taylor Fritz before losing in straight sets to 12th seed Diego Schwartzman. In the third set, his match against Fritz had the longest tiebreak in French Open history, with Sonego eventually winning 19-17. The Italian stunned world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets at the 2020 Erste Bank Open, winning 6-2 6-1. It was Djokovic’s third defeat of the season. Sonego advanced to the event final, but was defeated 4-6, 4-6 by fifth seed Andrey Rublev.
