Magda Linette is on her way to South Korea after a successful week in Chennai last week. The third seed advanced to the final after defeating Rebecca Marino, Oksana Selekhmetova, Moyuka Uchijima, and Katie Swan. Even though she lost in three sets to Czech teenager Linda Fruhvirtova, the 30-year-old Pole accomplished a lot. Linette improved significantly in the singles rankings, climbing to No. 51. It was her first WTA singles final in more than two years. She is now 32-24, having had her second-best season on record. Magda reached the quarterfinals of several WTA events. She also won doubles championships in Charleston and Eastbourne.
Arianne Hartono, the current World No. 179, is having trouble with her form. This season, she is 16-21 and has not won a WTA main-draw match since the Libema Open in June. Since then, the Dutchwoman has lost in the preliminary/qualifying rounds. She was eliminated in round one of the Chennai Open by Katie Swan, and she was eliminated in the US Open qualifiers by Clara Burel. Despite alternating between the ITF and WTA Tours, her season is marked by such results. The victories she did obtain came in the first matches. Hartono has a similar pedigree to Linette, with no WTA finals to her name.
