In an hour and 25 minutes, defending champion Zhu Lin defeated India’s Ankita Raina. Raina was not allowed to hold serve even once in the first set, but the Chinese was broken once, which was her only blemish in an otherwise flawless first set. In the first round of the competition, the fourth seed defeated local hope Jang Su-jeong 6-3, 6-4. Zhu’s season record now stands at 36-21 across all levels, thanks to the two victories. Zhu, who has three ITF titles this year, won the Korean Open as a WTA 125 event last year. This is Zhu’s first tour-level quarterfinal appearance this year.

Tatjana Maria needed only an hour and 22 minutes to beat Australia’s Kimberly Birrell in straight sets on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals. The World No. 80 saved four of four break points in the first set before bagging the Aussie and taking the lead. Birrell then fought back in the second set, with both players exchanging two breaks in the first five games. However, Maria took the lead with a third break in the sixth game and held on for a 6-0, 6-3 victory. The 35-year-old German is now 47-25 in what has been her most successful season.
