Lesia Tsurenko and Anna Kalinskaya will take on each other in the round of 16 of the 2023 WTA Thailand Open on February 1.
Lesia Tsurenko played Ysaline Bonaventure for a respectable two hours and thirteen minutes, but she nearly blew a 5-0 lead in the decisive set. Despite exposing fifteen breakpoints to the Belgian and hitting 10 double faults, she was broken five times and still managed to win 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. She continues to experience intermittent injuries, giving up in the quarterfinal of the Budapest tournament in July, withdrawing from the quarterfinals of the Portoroz tournament in September, and the W60 Canberra semifinal in January. Since the beginning of 2022, each of her three WTA quarterfinal appearances has ended in a forfeit, which keeps her outside the top 100.
Anna Kalinskaya faced a much lower calibre of opponent in the first round of Hua Hin after recently playing three top 20 players in Australia. She defeated qualifier and world no. 221 Ekaterina Makarova in just 45 minutes, winning an impressive 80% of points on returns. In the past 12 months, the Russian has only won four matches on clay and grass courts, but she has dominated on hard courts to get close to making her top 50 debut. She began 2022 with a Guadalajara semifinal, third-round finishes in Indian Wells and Miami, and quarterfinal appearances in Washington, DC, and Guadalajara (1000).
