On Sunday, Australian Nick Kyrgios will compete against World No. 115 Sweden's Mikael Ymer in the semifinals of the 2022 Citi Open.
In the most exciting match of the Washington Open, 2019 winner Nick Kyrgios defeated 10th seed Frances Tiafoe by turning the tables on him and moving on to the semifinals. Kyrgios had saved five match points in the second set tiebreak. The Australian won 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (14-12), 6-2 after saving 3 of the match’s 3 break points and converting 2 of the match’s 7 break points. Up to 221 points were exchanged during the match, with Kyrgios winning 116 of them. To Tiafoe’s 33 winners and 16 aces, he also hit 60 winners and 35 aces. Kyrgios has now defeated four Americans this week, including Tiafoe. The Australian won his opening round 6-3, 6-2 over Marcos Giron before downing Tommy Paul in the second round 6-3, 6-4. His Round of 16 match against Reilly Opelka was completed on Friday with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 victory for him. It had started on Thursday. Kyrgios increased his season record to 25-7 after participating in just his ninth tournament of the year. On Saturday, the Wimbledon runner-up will compete in the fifth semifinal.
115 in the world Mikael Ymer‘s unexpected success in the competition continued on Friday when the Swede defeated American Sebastian Korda 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 to advance to the final four. Ymer has advanced to the semifinals twice already this year; he also did so in Montpellier. Ymer’s four games in Washington have all gone the full two hours. He stunned Andy Murray in his opening match, winning 7-6 (10-8), 4-6, and 6-1. Ymer defeated Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori in the Round of 16 by scores of 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), and 6-4 after defeating 15th seed Aslan Karatsev in the following round by scores of 6-4, 3-6, and 6-4.
Nick Kyrgios and Mikael Ymer will face each other in the Semifinal round of the 2022 Citi open on Sunday, August 7. The ATP 500 competition is scheduled to start from August 1 and end on August 7 this year.
The 2022 Citi Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 1 and conclude on August 8 this year.
