With to a remarkable finale in which he took the final nine points of the match, the Australian beat Benjamin Bonzi 7-6(3), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the second round.
At the US Open on Wednesday night, Nick Kyrgios reached a tough spot and picked the difficult way to victory against gritty Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi. However, with to a remarkable finale in which he took the final nine points of the match, the Australian prevailed 7-6(3), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 and will face American J.J. Wolf in the third round. After winning the game, he broke Bonzi to love to move within one win of maintaining his end of the bargain, setting up a potentially explosive fourth-round match with World No. 1 and defending champion Daniil Medvedev.
“I was hanging by a thread. His level today was incredible,” Kyrgios said. “He was up a break in the fourth and it could have gone either way. I played some really risky tennis late in the fourth, which paid off, and I’m really happy to get through. I felt like Benjamin was eating up my serve, making so many returns. But 30 aces helps a lot. When my serve is going the rest of my game tends to follow.”
Nick Kyrgios and JJ Wolf are scheduled to face each other on Friday, September 2 in the third round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
