Nick Kyrgios is turning in strong performances and plays with a lot of drive and purpose. He won all four sets he played this week, 6-3 6-2 and 6-3 6-4 over Marcos Giron and Tommy Paul, who advanced to the ATP Atlanta quarterfinals the week before. It’s encouraging to see the gifted Australian player fight for victories, as he has throughout the bulk of the 2022 season, and appear focused on the court. When he lost to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon a few weeks ago, he achieved the best performance of his career by reaching the finals. Surprisingly, he was not happy with the situation and wants to return to the Grand slam stage again. He has competed in seven events so far this year and has advanced at least to the quarterfinal in five of them, with two of those runs occurring in the United States at Indian Wells (QF) and Houston (SF).

In the second round (R1 bye) of the ATP Washington, Reilly Opelka once again had issues with his serve, but they did not end up costing him the match as he was able to rally from a set down to defeat fellow countryman Denis Kudla, 7-6 6-4 6-4. The big-serving American achieved his career-high ranking of #17 earlier this year and consistently produced results (mainly on hard courts), but he hasn’t been the same player since suffering an injury at the Miami Masters in March. Before competing at the ATP Washington, he had dropped his serve much too frequently in several of his losses, losing five of his previous six matches. The 2021 ATP Dallas and Houston champion lost in straight sets to an Australian opponent, John Millman, in the round of 16 at the 2021 Democratic National Convention.
