On Tuesday Nick Kyrgios runner-up at Wimbledon will take on German player Peter Gojowczyk in the opening round of the 2022 ATP Atlanta Open.
Following a successful run at Wimbledon‘s All-England Lawn Tennis Club grass courts, Nick Kyrgios rejoins the tour. Kyrgios, who triumphed in Atlanta in 2016, will be confident following a successful season. In 2022, the men’s doubles team won the Australian Open, advanced to the semifinals in Halle and Stuttgart, and finished second at Wimbledon. Being a player who doesn’t always play a full schedule, Kyrgios has had a good year so far. The Australian player is seeded seventh in the singles and has teamed up with Thanassi Kokkinakis, a friend and fellow countryman with whom he won the first major of the year. He is hoping to have a successful start to the North American hard court swing.
Peter Gojowczyk formerly held a position of up to number 36 in the world, but he has subsequently dropped in the rankings, and it has been almost five years since he last won an ATP main draw tournament and four years since he last competed in a final. Gojowczyk has a considerably better Grand Slam record on hard courts, as he last year advanced to the fourth round of the US Open. The German qualifier here seemed to be in good shape, especially after overcoming Steve Johnson, who is typically a tough opponent on US hard courts. Gojowczyk will be hoping that this is the beginning of a return to form on his favourite surface, but the Australian Nick Kyrgios is not an easy opponent in the opening round.
Nick Kyrgios and Peter Gojowczyk will take on each other on Tuesday July 26 in the first round of the 2022 Atlanta open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 25 and conclude on July 31 this year.
