Nick Kyrgios and Taylor Fritz will take on each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Friday, October 7.
In the second round, Nick Kyrgios appeared to be in some difficulty after losing the first set to Kamil Majchrzak fairly easily and coming up against a breakpoint in his first service game of the second set. He did, however, reach his level in the middle of the second round and then dominated the rest of the match, winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. For the erratic Australian, this season has been extremely rewarding in many ways. In these ten months, he not only achieved some of the best outcomes of his career, but he also played with great determination and gave it his all each time he took the court.
First round opponent James Duckworth forced Taylor Fritz to go the distance, and second round opponent Hiroki Moriya—ranked #253 in the world—put her to the test. He surrendered his serve once in the decisive, 6-1 3-6 6-4, after falling behind early in the first set by a break. He also lost the second set. The American #1 hasn’t been convincing in either of his matches this week, but the outcome is all that matters at this point as it was anticipated that this would be a challenging week for him from the start. He withdrew from the ATP 250 competition last week and spent a week in COVID quarantine in Seoul before arriving in Tokyo just two days earlier.
Nick Kyrgios and Taylor Fritz are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Friday, October 7. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 3 and end on October 9.
