Dimitar Kuzmanov and Ugo Humbert are scheduled to face each other in the first round of the 2022 ATP Sofia Open on Tuesday, September 27.
Dimitar Kuzmanov has been given a wildcard into what is his home tournament, as his current ranking is insufficient to earn him an automatic place in the main draw. Despite this, his current world ranking represents some progress, as it is the highest he has achieved since turning professional in 2009. He won his first Challenger tournament in Barcelona last October and finished second in Bengaluru in February. Kuzmanov failed to qualify for the US Open at the last hurdle, but he has since won a Davis Cup tie for his country against South Africa and reached the second round in Genoa last week.
Ugo Humbert had had a difficult year since winning his third major tour title on the grass of Halle last June, and his ranking had plummeted as a result of a string of consistently poor results and form. Humbert did, however, halt his slide by winning a Challenger event in Rennes earlier this month, easily defeating former Grand Slam champion Dominic Thiem in the final. He was unable to carry that form into the Moselle Open, losing in three sets to compatriot Benjamin Bonzi in the first round, and was forced to compete in the qualifying tournament in Bulgaria. He defeated Ernests Gulbis of Latvia and Filip Cristian Jianu of Romania in straight sets, though Jianu required a second set tie-break.
Dimitar Kuzmanov and Ugo Humbert are scheduled to face each other in the first round of the 2022 ATP Sofia Open on Tuesday, September 27. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 26 and end on October 2.
