She was a massive 9/5 favorite going into her quarterfinal against Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur, but the manner of Veronika Kudermetova’s victory should serve her well throughout the US Open Series. Kudermetova defeated her highly ranked opponent 7-6 (5), 6-2 in a one-hour, 43-minute battle to advance to the semifinals. Kudermetova, who had previously defeated Camila Giorgi and Claire Liu in the first two rounds, broke Jabeur early but was broken right back, forcing the set to a tie-breaker. The Russian then broke Jabeur a couple of times to slam home the advantage against a helpless Jabeur.
Shelby Rogers’ career has been plagued by inconsistency, but in this tournament she has demonstrated what she is capable of if she can get her act together. Because, after dispatching Bianca Andreescu and Maria Sakkari in straight sets in the first two rounds of this competition, Rogers wasted no time in dispatching another in-form American, Amanda Anisimova. Rogers won the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 22 minutes, securing her place in the semifinals against Kudermetova. The American faced just one break-point throughout the match, while breaking Anisimova’s serve three times, including once when she was down 0-2.
