After losing to world no. 96 Aleksandra Krunic in the second round of the US Open, Barbora Krejcikova’s problems haven’t improved. The Czech has a 16-14 win-loss record in a year in which she missed two months due to an elbow injury. This record has declined to 9-12 since the beginning of February and 3-5 in her past five appearances. Since leaving Australia, she has not won three straight matches and is currently on a five-match losing run against top 100 players. The 26-year-old, who held the No. 2 ranking in the world until her disastrous championship defence at Roland-Garros, has dropped out of the top 20 and is certain to go even farther.
Ajla Tomljanovic wrapped off a bizarre North American tour earlier this month after advancing to the US Open and Cincinnati 1000 quarterfinals. In Flushing Meadows, she defeated Liudmila Samsonova in tight straight sets and defeated Serena Williams in a three-hour marathon. The Australian struggled to record more than two victories in a row in the first six months of the season and was unable to advance through a second-round match until late April. Since then, she has experienced a remarkable change of fortune, advancing all the way to the Wimbledon quarterfinals and cracking the top 40.
