Marta Kostyuk returns to Cluj-Napoca for the second time after a successful debut appearance at the event last year. Last season, the Ukrainian star reached the semifinals of this event, defeating Emma Raducanu before falling to Simona Halep in the final four. Kostyuk has had a difficult year in 2022, owing largely to her inability to produce consistent results. Her only major accomplishment is a semifinal finish at the Granby 250 event just before the US Open. However, given the events in her homeland, the majority of her poor form can be attributed to her emotional and psychological state. She still has a chance to re-enter the top 50, and she can do so with another strong performance at the Transylvania Open.
Jasmine Paolini is competing in her second indoor hard-court tournament, and the first since losing in the quarterfinals in Lyon in early March. Paolini’s ranking has plummeted to 76th in the midst of a mediocre season. Her inability to defend her two titles from last season has cost her a massive drop in the rankings. She has been getting closer to winning again, with two quarter final appearances in July and two semifinal finishes near the end of September. Paolini was defeated by Danka Kovinic in her most recent match in Parma. She is 21-23 on the season across all levels and will need to make a significant improvement to win on Monday.Â
