Sebastian Korda defeated Andy Murray in three sets to advance to the Gijon Open semifinals in a match that swung from one end to the other. On his way to a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 victory in two hours and 28 minutes, the World No. 47 hit 43 winners to Murray’s 25 and won 29 of 40 net points. This was the American’s second straight three-set victory. Korda’s season record now stands at 29-19. This is only his second semifinal appearance this year. He had previously lost in the final four stages in Estoril. Korda, who won the Emilia Romagna Open last year and finished second in Delray Beach, is aiming for a third ATP final.
Arthur Rinderknech fought back in a thrilling quarterfinal against Pablo Carreno Busta, saving nine match points before defeating the second seed 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (18-16) in three hours and five minutes. During the match, the World No. 56 served 14 aces and hit 55 winners. Rinderknech had won the first two rounds with ease, defeating Carlos Taberner 6-3, 6-3 and Constant Lestienne 6-4, 6-2. The Frenchman, who reached the quarterfinals of his previous two tournaments in Metz and Tel Aviv, will compete in his third tour-level semifinal on Saturday.
