Sebastian Korda and Andy Murray are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 ATP Gijon Open on Friday, October 14.
So far, Sebastian Korda appears to be on a one-man mission to prevent a Spaniard from winning on his home turf. He started his campaign in Gijon by easily defeating world number 57 Jaume Munar in straight sets. When the American went down a break in the second set, it appeared that the home crowd would be able to celebrate a victory. But Korda immediately responded with a break of his own, and then broke again, allowing him to close out the set and level the match. When Bautista-Agut was broken in the first game of the third set, it proved to be the game-winner. Despite the fact that both men created more breakpoints, none were taken, and Korda was the one who had something to cheer about in the end.
Andy Murray, who entered this tournament as a wildcard, defeated number six seed Alejandro Davidson-Fokina in the first round. But his second round match with Argentina’s Pedro Cachin, the world number 61, was anything but easy. Cachin, who broke the Scot’s serve to start the match, had much the better of the first set and won it with only two games lost. The second set was a serve-and-break battle until Murray found the inspiration to break Cachin and tie the match. The third set swung one way and then the other, and the pair traded breaks twice. This time, it went to a tie-break, which Murray dominated. Cachin saved two match points but couldn’t stop Murray from converting the third.
