Ilya Ivashka, ranked 53rd, will play world number 57 Sebastian Korda on Tuesday in the opening round of the 2022 ATP Citi Open.
For Sebastian Korda, the season had gotten off to a respectable start, but during the last few competitions, things have taken a turn for the worst for the American. Korda has dropped four out of his five matches since reaching the third round at the French Open, including a shocking loss to Taro Daniel in Atlanta’s opening round. With only seven victories to his name in 2022 so far, this was his sixth hard court loss of the year. Korda hopes to at least overcome this first obstacle in order to match his performance from last year, when he advanced to the round of 16. However, things may be exceedingly challenging if he has a strong opponent gazing at him from the opposite side of the net.
Ilya Ivashka has been on a roll of form, making it at least as far as the second round in each of his past six competitions. That record is made even greater by the fact that he has accomplished it on a variety of surfaces, including clay, grass, and most recently, hard court. Ivashka participated in four consecutive three-set matches at the Atlanta Open last week, winning three of them to advance to the semifinals. Before losing to Alex de Minaur in a duel after taking the first set, he had won over Steve Johnson and Tommy Paul among others. Ivashka had a 14-6 record on hard court surfaces the previous year, which includes his first title triumph in Winston-Salem.
Sebastian Korda and Ilya Ivashka will face each other in the first round of the 2022 Citi open on Tuesday, August 2. The ATP 500 competition is scheduled to start from August 1 and end on August 7 this year.
The 2022 Citi Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 1 and conclude on August 8 this year.
