On Wednesday, the 2022 WTA Hamburg Open's top seed Anett Kontaveit will compete against Rebecca Peterson in the second round.
Anett Kontaveit, the world’s No. 2 player, had a successful start to the 2022 season with a title run in St. Petersburg and a second-place finish at the Qatar Open. Her shape, however, suddenly deteriorated after that. Her getting the coronavirus and the ensuing toll on her health led to a string of early exits from Miami to Indian Wells, followed by an unremarkable clay swing. Anett and her coach Dmitry Tursunov parted ways after she lost her opening-round matches in Rome and the French Open. She moved to Hamburg a month later and appears confident and in good shape. Her 6-3, 7-6(3) victory against Irina Bara in the first round brought to mind the amazing surge that propelled her into the top three.
Rebecca Peterson, who is now ranked 93rd in the world, got off to a strong start in the competition by defeating Kateryna Baindl 6-3, 6-0. She has now increased her score to 15-11 thanks to this. She hasn’t had a very consistent year overall, and her accomplishments pale in comparison to Anett Kontaveit‘s. When Peterson last played, Laura Pigossi, who was ranked #125 at the time, defeated her in straight sets in Budapest. Similar opening setbacks occurred at Wimbledon and WTA Rabat, where she lost to Petra Marcinko and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, two players with lower rankings.
Anett Kontaveit and Rebecca Peterson will take on each other on Wednesday, July 20 in the second round of the 2022 WTA Hamburg European open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 17 and conclude on July 23 this year.
