Tennis fans have seen the rise and fall of global superstars for several years now. Many players have stepped on to the court with huge potential, but very few have made it big. With the competition for places becoming tighter than before, players are struggling to sustain their success at the top. Defying the odds, many legends like Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg and Pete Sampras have dominated the sport for numerous years. Let us look at the greatest ever players to have ruled the male tennis world:

Rod Laver

The former Australian legend is known for creating multiple firsts in the sport. He has clinched the maximum number of trophies in tennis history with 200 singles titles. Besides, Laver is one of the two players to have won each Grand Slam twice. With 11 Grand Slams to his name, he won four at Wimbledon, three at Australian Open and two each at French Open and US Open.

Laver has incredibly won all four Grand Slams in the same calendar year twice. 1962 was the first time it happened and he repeated the feat in Open Era (1969). He remains to be the only male player to reach the milestone in the Open Era. The left-hand player also played a major role in helping Australia win five Davis Cup titles.

Roger Federer

Federer’s achievements extend beyond the Grand Slams and Majors he has won. His ability to produce breathtaking groundstrokes while dominate his opponents is a treat to watch. He can make tennis look easy. Roger is the ideal definition of an all-round player. With a good forehand and backhand, his lethal serve is one of the major weapons of the Swiss Maestro.

The age-defying star continues to be a serious title contender even at 39 years of age. His 20 Grand Slam victories include eight Wimbledon titles, five US Open and six Australian Open trophies. Having struggled to establish his mark in the clay, Federer finally got his hands on the French Open title in 2009. He is arguably the greatest ever player tennis has seen till date.

Rafael Nadal

The king of clay has diminished several doubts about his ability to perform at other surfaces beyond the clay courts. After the initial few years, when he kept winning only the French Open, Nadal started to prove his detractors wrong. He famously defeated Federer in the 2008 Wimbledon final and went on to win multiple Grand Slams at other surfaces as well.

He has 20 Grand Slam titles to his name and 13 of which have come at Roland Garros. Rafa has won four at US Open, two in Wimbledon, and a solitary Australian Open trophy. Nadal’s biggest strength is pace. His athleticism and fierce forehand allow the Spaniard to dominate his opponents in the toughest of conditions. He is showing no signs of slowing down at 34, making him a favourite to end his career as the all-time leader in Grand Slam trophy list.
