When the tournament began, few expected number 27 seed Karen Khachanov to advance this far. Nonetheless, he is on his way to his first Grand Slam semifinal. In the quarterfinals, the 26-year-old Russian defeated Nick Kyrgios 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-4 in a three-hour and 41-minute match on Tuesday. Karen’s calmness and tenacity got him through the battle of endurance and skills. While he only had 63 winners to Kyrgios’s 75, he only had 31 unforced errors – nearly half as many as his opponent. In the previous round, Khachanov faced Pablo Carreno Busta in a five-setter; before that, he breezed through his matches against Jack Draper, Thiago Monteiro, and Denis Kudla.
Casper Ruud, who is now ranked World No. 7, is on track to have his best season yet. At the age of 23, he appears to be confident of reaching his second Grand Slam final in a calendar year. His most recent accomplishment was at the French Open, where he lost to Rafael Nadal in the final. But, with no big guns in the mix this time, Ruud is the 3/1 second favorite to win the US Open 2022, trailing only Carlos Alcaraz. Ruud’s transition into the semis has been relatively smooth. Ruud’s record now stands at 43-15, which includes three ATP 250 titles and two runner-up finishes in Miami and Paris. He recently reached the Canadian Open semifinals as well.
