When Sofia Kenin and Sloane Stephens face off in the opening round of the 2022 WTA Canadian Open on Monday as two Grand Slam champions will clash.
Sofia Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion, has had a forgettable season. She had a respectable start to the year with a run to the quarterfinals in Adelaide, but she was eliminated in the first round in Sydney and Melbourne. In Dubai and Doha in the Middle East and later in Indian Wells in the United States, the same pattern persisted. The 23-year-old missed the entire clay and grass season since around this time, Sofia hurt herself. She is currently 416th in the world. The seven-time WTA career finalist didn’t rejoin the tour until last week. She lost to the struggling Colombian Camila Osorio in the tournament in Washington, DC, 7-6(2), 6-1. Things will be a little tough for Sofia Kenin in the near future as she attempts to regain momentum and shape that have been lost.
Sloane Stephens, the 2017 US Open champion, experienced a similar situation, despite the fact that she is still in a superior position to Kenin. The 29-year-old defeated Marie Bouzkova in the championship match to claim her first singles victory since the 2018 Miami Open this season. However, early exits at Indian Wells, Miami, Charleston, Madrid, Rome, and Strasbourg were followed by that run. Sloane reached the quarterfinals in Paris before she returned to form at Roland Garros. However, she promptly lost in the first round of the Citi Open, Wimbledon, and Bad Homburg. Her loss to Ajla Tomljanovic last week surely cast doubt on her form (10-11 as of this week), making it more challenging for her to advance further in Toronto.
Sofia kenin and Sloane Stephens are scheduled to face one another in the round of 64 of the 2022 Canadian Open on Monday, August 8. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 8 till August 15.
The 2022 edition of the Canadian Open is set to begin from August 8 and go on until August 15. The men’s final is scheduled to be on August 15 and the women’s one is set to be held on August 14. There will be six rounds of play in the main draw excluding the qualifiers.
