Kasatkina and Keys have faced each other a total of eight times in the past with the American coming out on top in seven matches.
A convincing display against Leylah Fernandez on Wednesday saw eighth seed Daria Kasatkina cruise into the last of 16 of the 2022 WTA San Diego Open. The Russian established a quick lead in the first set after winning the first four games as Fernandez found it difficult to keep pace with her. Although the Canadian did get two games in the bag, the gap proved to be a bit too much to overcome as Kasatkina won the first set. The eighth seed began the second set much like she did in the first. After racing to a 3-0 lead, Kasatkina was in complete control and she rounded off the match 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the next round of the tournament.
The Russian will face home favourite Madison Keys in the round of 16. Keys was up against qualifier Ellen Perez in the first round and much like Kasatkina, recorded a convincing triumph. The American only dropped one game in the first set to clinch a 6-1 advantage. Perez attempted a decent comeback in the second as she went up 3-0 but Keys made a strong comeback. From 4-2 down, the American found her groove and went to take the match 6-1, 6-4.
Kasatkina and Keys have faced each other a total of eight times in the past with the American coming out on top in seven matches. However, the last time these two competed, it was Kasatkina who got the bragging rights.
