Aslan Karatsev, ranked 38th in the world, will face Brandon Nakashima, ranked 63rd in the world, in the opening round of the 2022 ATP Cincinnati Masters on Monday.
Ranked 38 Aslan Karatsev had a breakthrough year in 2021, making it to the semifinals of the Australian Open, reaching three finals, and winning two of them. He also won a silver medal at the Olympics in Tokyo’s Mixed Doubles competition. When he triumphed in the Sydney International in January, it appeared like he would carry over his good form into the new year. But since then, things have not turned out as he had intended, and he has been struggling for outcomes for months. The declining trend was halted by consecutive quarterfinal appearances in Bastad and Hamburg, but he has dropped his last three games, losing in the first round in Kitzbuhel, Washington, and Montreal.
Although he lost both times, Brandon Nakashima reached consecutive finals in Los Cabos and Atlanta last year, he has so far unable to recapture that same summer form. He did, however, make it to Wimbledon’s fourth round, which was his greatest performance in a Grand Slam competition to date. The American has a dismal track record in Masters competitions, never progressing past the second round in any of them. His lone previous trip to Cincinnati was unsuccessful, as he was eliminated from the Canadian Open last week at the same level after losing to Cameron Norrie in straight sets.
Aslan Karatsev and Brandon Nakashima are scheduled to face one another in the Opening round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Monday, August 15. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 14 till August 21.
The 2022 Cincinnati Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final for both men’s and women’s. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 14 and conclude on August 21 this year.
