Kaia Kanepi and Anna Kalinskaya will face each other in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 Citi Open on Friday, August 5.

After a straightforward victory in the first round, Lin Zhu pushed Kanepi to three sets in the second round before Kanepi eventually prevailed. For the first time since she advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, she now seeks her third straight victory in a competition. After falling behind in the first set, Kanepi overcame it to defeat her 97th-ranked opponent 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 38 minutes. As she takes on a player who has recently displayed flashes of brilliance that helped her break into the top 70 for the first time in her career, she will hope to return to her best.
Now, Simona Halep did suffer an untimely injury, allowing Anna Kalinskaya to advance to the next round, but the Russian had already troubled her opponent enough. Kalinskaya, who required a medical timeout in her first-round victory over Madison Brengle, was 7-5, 2-0 up against Halep when the Romanian player retired. It was Kalinskaya’s solid first serves that helped, with the Russian winning 18 of the 21 points on them, but she would like to do a lot better on two counts: get more than half of her first serves in and win more than the 38 percent of her second serve points she won.

The 2022 Citi Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 1 and conclude on August 8 this year.
