On Monday, Rebecca Peterson of Sweden will play Anna Kalinskaya of Russia in the opening round of the 2022 US Open.
Just a few weeks ago 92 in the world, Rebecca Peterson competed in the semifinal of the Vancouver Challenger, where she defeated Lucia Bronzetti after defeating Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, Catherine Harrison, and Maddison Inglis. She also had her season’s best run during that one. She didn’t capitalise on it, either, as she lost in straight sets against Nuria Parrizas Diaz in the subsequent Granby event. Prior to this month, some of her previous accomplishments included making it to the quarterfinals of the ITF Wiesbaden and Bastad Challenger and the second round of the WTA Adelaide 2 and Melbourne Set 2 tournaments. It is evident that Peterson hasn’t had the best or most consistent season. Kalinskaya is set rather beautifully to ruin her party in the midst of this.
Even though she hasn’t been at her best lately, Anna Kalinskaya has still had a much better season than Peterson. She most recently participated in the Citi Open, where she lost to Kaia Kanepi in the quarterfinals. She then advanced as a qualifier to the second round in Cincinnati. Aryna Sabalenka was the opponent, but she gave up in the second set. While Anna did not perform as well on clay and grass courts, she did exceptionally well in the early-year hard court competitions. The current World No. 60 qualified for the Indian Wells Open, Miami Open, and WTA Guadalajara, where she advanced to the third round in each event.
Rebecca Peterson and Anna Kalinskaya are scheduled to face one another in the first round match of the US Open 2022 on Monday, August 29. The 2022 US Open is all set to begin from August 29 till September 11.
