Ji Sung Nam and Steve Johnson will face each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Korea Open on Tuesday, September 27.
Steve Johnson lost to Grigor Dimitrov in the first round of the US Open and Alejandro Tabilo in the first round of his subsequent match in San Diego last week, marking the first time this year that he had suffered back-to-back opening-round defeats. The former American No. 1 has had a respectable season with 26 victories from 49 matches and an 11-4 w-l record in opening-round matches on the main tour, especially in light of the fact that he concluded the 2021 season with a negative w/l record (20/21) and went 6-6 in opening-round matches. When he used to compete frequently in the Asian swing, his best successes included twice making it to the quarterfinals in Tokyo in 2014 and 2017, when he once defeated Dominic Thiem.
In each of the 2018 and 2019 seasons, Ji Sung Nam won precisely 40 matches across all levels. However, the absence of events in Asia since the pandemic had an impact on him, and in recent years, he has begun to show greater interest in doubles matches. Only 20 of his singles matches this year have ended in victories, but 40 of his doubles matches have, earning him seven titles on lower-level circuits. The 29-year-old South Korean will enter the main draw of a tour event in Seoul this week as a wildcard, but he hasn’t played a competitive singles match since he retired from the Nonthaburi Challenger last month, so this is definitely not the best moment for him to compete at this level.
Steve Johnson and Ji Sung Nam are scheduled to face each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Korea Open on Tuesday, September 27. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 24 and end on October 2.
The 2022 ATP Korea Open is scheduled to commence on September 24 and go on until October 2 this year. The tournament will have five rounds of play excluding the qualifiers. These are the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.
