In the fourth round matchup with semifinalist Martina Trevisan at Roland-Garros, Jessica Pegula was far from at her best. Both were broken at least six times, but the world No. 3 emerged victorious 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 as the Italian’s sixth double-fault brought the match to a close. She had won eight three-set matches this year, which ranks as the second-best total on the tour. So far, my stay in Madrid has been challenging. The third seed had to survive a tiebreak despite having beaten qualifier Marie Bouzkova and Magdalena Frech in the earlier rounds in straight sets. After Doha, Dubai, Miami, and Charleston, she has advanced to her sixth quarterfinal of the season and will try to reach her fifth semifinal.
Veronika Kudermetova had dropped six of her previous seven games when she arrived in Madrid. With a total court time of eight hours and seventeen minutes, she has now survived three straight three-set matches to advance into her first Madrid quarterfinal on her third main draw appearance. Her first victory since Indian Wells came in the opening round, a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory over local qualifier Nuria Parrizas-Diaz. Then, after surviving a tiebreak against both of her seeded compatriots, Anastasia Potapova and Daria Kasatkina, she needed almost three hours. Against the latter, she had to fend off a few match points.
