Jessica Pegula vs Camila Giorgi will take place in the second round of the 2023 French Open on May 31.
Jessica Pegula was broken three times by compatriot Danielle Collins, but she cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Suzanne-Lenglen in the battle of Roland-Garros quarterfinalists. She needed a straight-set win after losing in the first round to Taylor Townsend in Rome, her first loss in over a year. Since the beginning of 2021, the American has reached five Grand Slam quarterfinals, including one at Roland-Garros last year, where she defeated Anhelina Kalinina and Irina-Camelia Begu in three sets. It is a tournament where she did not win her first career victory until the third round at the age of 27 in 2021.
Camila Giorgi hit 15 breakpoints and converted seven of them in a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alize Cornet at the Philippe-Chatrier. Given her inconsistent performance this season, this is a solid victory. She arrived in Paris having only competed in two clay-court events, losing in the first round in Madrid and in the third round in Rome. In her ten years of playing at Roland-Garros, the Italian has reached the third round twice, once in 2018 and once last year as part of her last-16 finish. She would be hampered by the fact that she has only won back-to-back matches four times since last year’s Wimbledon, though that includes a title run in Merida.
