Zheng Qinwen and Jelena Ostapenko will take on each other in the round of 16 of the 2023 WTA Abu Dhabi Open on February 8.
Jelena Ostapenko defeated Danielle Collins 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 to continue her winning streak in the United Arab Emirates. She faced the American in her first match since the Australian Open, where she advanced to her first major quarterfinal since the 2018 Wimbledon. Both players had 44 unforced errors while keeping their winning percentages in the low 30s. In addition to winning a title in Dubai by defeating Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova, and Iga Swiatek in three sets, she also reached the WTA 1000 semifinals in Doha last year. Since the end of the grass-court swing, she has only made it to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and Seoul.
Zheng Qinwen made a winning start to her career’s first WTA tournament in the United Arab Emirates by launching 24 winners and 10 aces at the expense of 18 unforced errors. The Chinese youngster easily defeated qualifier Rebecca Marino, who was ranked 74th, by scores of 6-3, 6-3 after suffering three consecutive second-round defeats in Australia. Just 15 months after claiming her first main draw victory on the tour, the 20-year-old positioned herself in the top 30. In the previous season’s Melbourne Summer Set, Toronto, and Tokyo, she made it to her first three WTA quarterfinals. In fact, she came very close to winning the title in Tokyo, finishing second to Liudmila Samsonova.
