Jelena Ostapenko is having her best clay-court season since winning Roland-Garros in 2017. While she was unable to win more than one match in Stuttgart and Madrid, the Latvian advanced to the Italian Open semifinals after defeating Barbora Krejcikova, Daria Kasatkina, and Paula Badosa, and only losing to Elena Rybakina. Since her sensational victory in Paris six years ago, the 25-year-old has lost in the first round on three of her five visits to the tournament and has only three wins on its grounds. She did, however, remind the tour of her underlying prowess by reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, her best slam result since the 2018 Wimbledon.

Tereza Martincova began the clay-court season by finishing second to Viktoriya Tomova at W80 Zaragoza. It was the first time this season that she had advanced past the second round of any tournament at any level. Unfortunately, that performance was followed by first-round defeats at 125K Saint-Malo, Rome, and Strasbourg. The Czech was ranked in the top 50 just over a year ago and is now fighting to stay in the top 100. It won’t help her mood that she has lost nine of her 12 main draw tournaments in the first round. Her lone career victory in Paris came two years ago at the expense of world No. 255 Ivana Jorovic.

The Czech was forced to play for two hours and 21 minutes, but she eventually outlasted Jelena Ostapenko, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, in the second round of Birmingham two years ago. It will be difficult for her to replicate her resilience on clay courts, especially given her 5-24 record against top 20 players.
