Ons Jabeur, the third seed, and Elise Mertens, the 24th seed, will compete for a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. Ons had the the pleasure of defeating a number of well-known athletes in these competitions, including Simona Halep, Belinda Bencic, Coco Gauff and Maria Sakkari. It was only a matter of time before Jabuer reached a Grand Slam as well as given her excellent form and consistency on all three surfaces. She hasn’t lost a set yet, easily defeating Mirjam Bjorklund, Katarzyna Kawa and Diane Parry. She easily defeated Parry 6-2, 6-3 in 2 sets carrying the momentum for the fourth round.
Only for the second time in her career, Elise Mertens advanced to the round of 16 in London. She played shaky three-set matches against up-and-coming competitors like Camilo Osoria and Panna Udvardy so far in her campaign. After surviving them the world’s best double player turned her focus to Angelique Kerber , a former World number one and Wimbledon Champion, entered the match as the favourite. Elise defeated the 15th seed 6-4, 7-5 in just under an hour, shocking her. She prevailed because to few unforced mistakes (14 compared to Kerber’s 26) and a methodical, skillfully executed the strategy. Last time Jabeur and Mertens met Mertens defeated Ons by 2-0 in the US open 2021.
Jabeur and Mertens are scheduled to face each other on Sunday, July 3 in the fourth round of the 2022 Championships. The timing of the match has not been decided yet. The Championships is scheduled to begin on June 27 and go on until July 10. There were a number of exciting matches on July 3 as the likes of Ostapenko, Jabeur and others will be in action.
